100 balloons in the sky

A fun benefit to living in a smaller city is the amount of festivals we have. There has been something special going on in Reno almost every weekend since we arrived this summer. This weekend we joined in the celebration and woke up while it was still very dark to attend the dawn patrol at the Great Reno Balloon Race. It was one of the coolest things I have ever seen.

We bundled up and sat close enough to feel the warmth from the balloon fire. My daughter was mesmerized. Have you seen a hot air balloon up close? They are huge and beautiful.

After the before dawn glow show, they launched 100 of these giant balloons into the air. The sky over our city was filled with them. It was magical.

All photos taken by my friend, Chris Heifner who also happens to play really great music.

blessings.

  1. Lovely shots! We have a balloon festival here as well – 2 years ago they flew over our house and one of them had to do an emergency landing in my neighbours yard…that was a little too close to get to the balloon ;)

  2. Beautiful. There is just something gorgeous about a hot air balloon floating in the sky. We have a big balloon festival over the July 4th holiday near me in Battle Creek Michigan. Sometimes they stray this way and when I am lucky enough to catch one (or 2 or 3) flying over one of the many lakes in the area it takes my breath away.

  3. oooo, i love the balloons in reno! we were there the week before (bbq) and will be there this week (air races), but have somehow lacked the desire to drive up for the balloons since our son was born. love the pics! and great work getting your feed going :)

  4. Oh my goodness how cool!! I moved to a new city last summer so it has been really fun to learn about all of the different festivals and city-specific events that go on around here. I love this idea though…I’ve never seen a hot air balloon close up!

  5. My sister and niece went to this festival in Reno also and sent my Mom some pics! These are beautiful pictures. I’ve gone to a few locally when I was younger. They really are magical!
