updated grilling ideas + printable animal markers

I’m sharing these updated grill tips as a part of a short campaign I am doing with the new show The Chew. Have you seen it yet? I watched it for the first time last month when my mother-in-law insisted on its awesomeness, and it was great. I mean… any show boasting Clinton Kelley is one I will watch, and the format of cooking show + lifestyle and entertaining tips in a talkshow atmosphere makes it great fun to watch.

Although the “All American Meal” will be served up often this season, it is always fun to make things a little more special. And quite often it’s the subtle and simple updates that can take an afternoon grill and make it memorable. Here are three simple ways to update your grilling options.

1. Rosemary sprigs

Present your steak in style, cut into cubes and stuck with sprigs of rosemary. This off-the-grill meat makes a grand entrance in style. It’s a great way to serve food from the grill for appetizers, or to share different cuts with the whole table.

2. Offer a selection of options + downloadable animal markers

Although hamburgers are the norm around our house, when entertaining it is always fun to add in a few new options. Guests love being able to try out different meats, and the addition of sausage, bacon or chicken will enliven palates and make your house the place they want to be this grill season.

Be sure to mark your selections with these simple outlined animal markers. Print your own by downloading them here, cut out, and glue onto serving picks for a spread that won’t soon be forgotten.

3. Make simple – great

Matt and I have come a long way from the first time he cooked a steak for me (it was the worst!). Now I actually prefer his homemade version over going out to a restaurant. The secret is in the steak rub. When you prepare a steak with rub it becomes a storehouse of flavor. Make an extra batch of rub to gift to your guests in simple fabric wraps to enjoy the flavor even after your grill is closed for the day.

Here is our favorite (Matt’s secret) steak rub: In a bowl combine 2 tsp paprika, 2 tsp ground coriander, 2 tsp oregano, 3 garlic cloves minced, 3 fresh rosemary springs minced, 1 tsp dry mustard, 1 tsp black pepper, and a dash of salt.
