How to make a cake topper with silk flowers

Inside: How to make a cake topper with silk flowers.

When thinking about topping cakes for birthdays and showers I always search for a dramatic look with minimal effort. That’s exactly what this fun and a DIY bouquet of fake flower cake topper is. I’ve fallen in love with the look of sugar flowers on a cake as seen here and here. But what happens when you don’t want to invest hours making the delicate sugar flowers, or spend hundreds of dollars buying them?

A combination of pinks and berries is a great look for a spring bridal shower, while a more wild display with large yellow flowers will center a birthday party with ease.

DIY Bouquet with fake flowers, paper flowers and everything in-between!

Artificial flowers are an easy stand-in and they look absolutely stunning, for the grand total of about $3 a cake! Now that is a dessert look I can easily get behind. Here are a few other fake flower projects that I love!

Supplies you will need for your DIY bouquet fake flowers for a cake

To make the fake flower cake topper (in a sanitary way!) you will need:

  • A cake
  • Artificial flowers (your local dollar store or craft store will have them in mass)
  • Wooden skewers
  • Scissors
  • Soap and water

How to make a make cake topper with silk flowers

1. Start by thoroughly washing all the flowers with soap and water, allow them to fully dry.

2. Cut off the stems of the flowers, or simply pull them off with your hands to leave the small top with the opening.

3. Insert a bamboo skewer or toothpick into the opening. I started the project using toothpicks but wanted to create a more dramatic display so the skewers allow the flowers to be taller giving good dimension when covering the cakes.

Be sure to remove the flowers before eating – obviously. ;) The result of this very little investment is a gorgeous dessert display that everyone will quickly be gushing over.

PS. With the extra flowers make a strand of party lights, a wreath, party hats, or plaster floral seating cards to complete the look. I suppose we may have a little crush on artificial flowers around here.
