Gigantic wall stars

Gigantic wall stars

Since you guys loved our summer stars so much, I thought we should definitely do something star studded for the holidays. Since this time of year is so special, it seemed best to go very BIG with the stars. I love the look of these huge paper stars behind a Christmas tree or sporadically placed together on a wall to celebrate the holiday season. I love the look of a simple but large display this time of year.

The stars are really simple to put together. Just cut out five identical diamond shapes with poster board and cover with your choice of wrapping paper designs. Fold each diamond in half and glue all five together. We chose wrapping paper with design and texture to really make a statement, make it more girlie by using floral patterns, or more graphic by using solid colors. Anyway you put it together the final product is a fabulous statement this time of year.

Gigantic wall stars!

I love the stars especially when paired with a smaller Christmas tree. This is a fun idea for those who need to have smaller trees this year (or no tree at all), to make the room seem just as festive without all the evergreen.

PS. More Christmas decorations right here.

  1. Please can you supply instructions as to how to make these stars, they are for our church Christmas banquet.

    Thanks

  2. The stars are fabulous and I would love to make several of them for my family Christmas Eve…are you able to give me the dimensions of the diamond shapes for the large star….much appreciated!
    Thank you!!

    • Hola Victoria
Me gustaria que me enviases los patrones de todas las estrellas de distintos tamaños y si pudiera ser tambien un video del paso a paso .

  3. I just had to post to thank you so much for sharing! These were exactly what I was looking for in order to decorate my daughter’s room! She’ll have a large 3-d shooting star in her room thanks to you :)

  4. I love these stars for our middle school play, Peter Pan, but I can’t figure out how to make them. Please send more directions! Thanks!

  5. I too, think this is a fantastic decoration and am quite curious about the “gluing” part. I would love the instructions (more specific that is). Thank you in advance.

    • Rita, Hi! Directions are written out above in the post. Please let me know if there’s a specific spot that is making you stuck. Thanks!

  6. Do you have a video how to make these or more detailed “how to instructions”. I’ve read over what you wrote above & still have no clue what to do. Thank you!

  7. Oh my heck! I LOVE these stars! Uber cute! Am I overlooking the link to the directions? I tried cutting posterboard 23×23″. I can’t get them to line up right and still keep the 3d shape. Any help would be so very appreciated!

  8. your instructions are great for a person that knows what they are doing, not so much for visual people that would benefit from a few more pictures showing details.

Would you please consider creating an actual tutorial with step by step pictures showing the individual points before folding, after folding, and how they are glued together?

  9. “Just cut out five identical diamond shapes with poster board and cover with your choice of wrapping paper designs. Fold each diamond in half and glue all five together.”

These directions were lacking quite a bit of information. 5 identical diamonds, when properly overlapped, can create a star as pictured, but simply folding each piece in half and gluing them together doesn’t seem like it would work well because after meeting at the center the fold would need to inverse, which without additional information I was unable to understand.

I ended up cutting diamond shapes that are the shape you see where the 5 pieces intersect, longer on the top end and shorter at the point of intersection. Needless to say, I ended up doing some math and visualization of how exactly these diamonds should intersect and found that how I was making them, diamonds intersecting in the center, each short end of my diamond would have to have an angle at the point of intersection equal to 72º, then I had to figure out how long each side should be and according to that… OMG math! I won’t get into full detail here, but some more in-depth instruction would have saved me. I see quite a few people asking about how you did this but no additional details.

Anyway, thank you for the idea, I think it will look great!

p.s. if anyone wants instructions to follow my method, let me know!

  10. After looking at this for a few minutes, yes I agree the instructions are a bit lacking. My thoughts are that the pieces look more like a kite template rather than a diamond. a kite template is easy to find by search. I think I might try making one using hot glue and duct tape on the inside for stability. Off to give it a try.
