Birthday cakes baked in bags

Birthday cake baked in a bag!

I’m always on the lookout for fresh ways to serve up our favorite treat – cake! Putting cakes in bags is just about the best idea we’ve dreamt up yet. It’s a fun way to bring dessert to a friend’s house, or a school party and not worry about leaving your fancy platters behind. For a summer picnic, the lake, or even the office – this bag of sweet awesomeness will be your best hit yet.

To make the cakes in bags you will need; your favorite cake and frosting recipes (here are mine!), or for an even easier treat 1 box cake mix (any flavor) and 1 can of frosting (any flavor). You’ll also need paper “lunch” bags (we used three bags sized 10.5 x 5.25 x 3.25), tin foil, and baking spray.

Start by preparing the bags; fold down all edges of a brown paper bag uniformly until the entire fold is over halfway down the bag. You could also use small party bags for a great way to serve this treat in miniature form.

Cut two strips of tin foil that will fit inside and cover the interior of the bag on all 4 sides. Spray the interior of bag with baking spray so the cake will be easy to remove.

Follow your recipe instructions to prepare the cake batter. Pour about a cup and a half of batter into each bag. Make sure there is enough space for the cake to rise inside the bag.

Place the filled bags onto a baking sheet and place in oven. Bake at 350F for about 25 minutes. Keep an eye on the bags while in the oven! Insert a toothpick in the center of each cake to check for doneness.

Allow cakes to cool on a wire rack. Frost and decorate. Cakes can be removed by tearing the paper bags, or the cakes can be sliced directly in the bags to be enjoyed.
