Cakes & Cuts: Bows

Bow bun

It is almost time to jump fully into the holiday season. We’ve ordered our cards, stacked up on wrapping ideas, and found the perfect bows to go with it all. It is a great time of year to settle in and focus on the details. Like bows!

The right bow can make or break a package. Including… our hair and cakes. Why not top everything in life with large and pretty bows? They are sure to make the outfit & dessert table classically festive in the best possible way.

How to make a fondant bow for topping treats.

Making a fondant bow is a subtle way to top desserts with a special holiday touch. First, learn how to work with fondant the right way, then the process of making a bow will be a piece of cake.

To make the fondant dessert bows you will need:

  • 1.5 lb package of pure white rolled fondant (Wilton)
  • Powdered, or confectioner’s, sugar (for dusting)
  • A rolling pin
  • Ruler
  • Pastry brush or paintbrush
  • Sharp knife

FONDANT BOWS

  1. Cut a small block from the leftover fondant; about a 2″ x 2″ block is enough for a set of a dozen bows.
  2. Sprinkle powdered sugar on your rolling surface. Take your block and roll it into a cylinder, then flatten it out with your palm. Roll it out into a long piece, about 13 or 14″ long.
  3. Measure out your first strip. Take a ruler and place it on top of the fondant; using the ruler as a guide, cut a strip of fondant that is 12″ long and 1/2″ across.
  4. Take a knife and cut the strip into about 9 pieces. You will need 3 pieces of the strip for each bow.
  5. Use your hands to shape one piece into a V for the bottom, use the knife to cut out the V. Take one piece and fold it over itself to make the bow loops. Set the loops on top of the bottom V. Use the last of the three pieces to wrap everything together.

Top the cakes and cupcakes with the simple bows for a holiday presentation that is as classic as it is stylish.

How to make a bow bun

A bow bun! Fun holiday party look.

A Bow Bun

The bow topped cakes will go great with a bow bun in your hair – a pitch perfect holiday look. It’s a look that says I am here to party, but I still have it all together. Here’s how to get this look:

  1. Start by putting the hair in a very high and tight ponytail.
  2. Pull the ponytail into a bun, leaving out about 3 inches of hair out in the front, to pull back later.
  3. Poof the bun out so it’s a wide 1/2 circle and then split it down the middle.
  4. Take the hair left out of the bun and pull it around the center of the split to make the bow. Pin down in the back with a couple bobbie pins.
  5. Depending on your hair type, pin down the bow sides as well to keep the shape in tact.

I am loving this look for last minute holiday parties and festive days at the office. Cheers to a sweet season of glitter and bows.
