Sherbert & Spice sneak peak + a prize

05.24.10 Posted in 30x30, design, giveaway by Victoria

The Sherbert & Spice party this weekend was such a great joy for me. It is one of my favorite designs so far in the 30×30 challenge. I am working with a new photographer Jackie Wonders- who I still cannot believe is shooting for me as her work is insanely amazing. Being awesome takes time though so I am forced to wait a few more days to share the party with you. Patience is a virtue right???

Here is a sneak peak of the party taken by one of the our guests, Julia….

To help with learning patience as I wait we are going to play a little game. Here are the rules…

  • You guess how many circles we cut out of paper & felt for this party. To help you out I will tell you that we used the circles for party bunting, a tee-pee and a centerpiece chandelier.
  • Whoever guesses closest to the number will win this beautiful 8×10 print that was a major inspiration in the design, old fashion french macrons at their best!

From me to you… Now guess away.

Contest will end and the winner will be announced when the party photos finally are shown.

In the meantime you are in store for a wonderful week of amazing hand-made parties, DIY projects and a few extra lovely details- Happy Monday.

blessings.

P.S. A special little hint I still have a blister on my finger from cutting all those insane little notches in the circles;)

Impractical Food- bread spoons

05.20.10 Posted in 30x30, design, food, party by Victoria

As promised here is the somewhat impractical but oh-so lovely food accessory from the recent sly fox baby shower. May I present for your baking pleasure… bread spoons.

Make impractically lovely bread-spoons yourself…

If you have been around here at all you know that I do not actually “make food”. My spoons start as all my food does, with a nice package of dough. For our shower a talented friend actually made the spoons with fresh herbed focaccia- YUM! They work just as well though with purchased dough.

To make the bread-spoons:

  • First roll out the dough into one thin layer.
  • Spread the thin layer over a metal spoon, be sure to keep the layer as thin as possible as you cover the spoon- it will poof up quite a bit once baked.
  • Using your thumb or another spoon press in the shape of the spoon. Press as firm as possible to ensure a good spoon form once baked.
  • Pop a tray of these in the oven and bake. Mine were finished in about 80% regular bake time. Let cool and enjoy.

They are great to use with soups, as you dip the spoon into the soup the bread will slowly melt away leaving you with an actual spoon to use. Try them one night at home and allow yourself your kids to play with their food and eat it too:)

While writing this tutorial I suddenly had a craving for cookies which quickly lead me to these….

Cookie-spoons!

Replace the bread with cookie dough, use a much smaller spoon and you have the perfect compliment for an afternoon cup of coffee. Stir and enjoy the goodness of chocolate chips melting in your cup. I couldn’t be more pleased…

Wouldn’t these be lovely to serve at a brunch or give as party (wedding) favors tied with pretty ribbon and a small bag of coffee. I think I am in love;)

June= picnic month

05.19.10 Posted in 30x30, design, giveaway by Victoria

A few weeks ago I feel in love with this idea of having a picnic club. Shortly after I swooned over this picnic so glamorously designed. My new obsession for picnics has been firmly sealed after seeing this sweetly done urban one early this week.

(An urban picnic)

My own picnic design has quickly followed this new obsession and soon I will be sharing printables for an easy to replicate afternoon soiree under a tree, but I don’t want to stop there. Today it is beginning to feel like summer and what better way to celebrate than by throwing a picnic for your friends!

So… we are setting aside June to celebrate picnic month…

While I am busy working on this picnic design, I want to encourage you to celebrate this summer as well. Throughout the month of June in addition to sharing a lovely picnic projects, details & photo’s- I also want to hear from you.

June 1st we will be launching a huge contest with my first ever Mr. Linky where you can load up and share with us your picnic photos and plans. I will be featuring your real life picnics throughout the month and I have a fabulous (secret for now) prize for my favorite one.

I want to let you know about the contest early so you can begin to dream up your own picnic- big or small, costly or not. I cannot wait to see what you come up with.

Breathe deep, celebrate, take a few photos… summer is almost here.

Sly little Mr. Fox

05.16.10 Posted in 30x30, design, events by Victoria

A baby shower, Sly Little Fox was thrown this weekend with great joy. I just adore Debbie, the mom-to-be. It was a blessing working with her friends and to plan this special evening for her. Baby boy is due in July and his favorite animal is now officially a fox:)

Designing a baby shower, boy style can often seem a bit challenging. Making whimsically inspired pieces, like this hand-crafted fox mask go a long way towards bringing boyish style to life. Tutorial for the mask coming soon.

Touches of grown up design also helped sophisticate the feel of this shower. We used solid, dark wood furniture as our backdrop- bringing in a desk, a bookcase, side tables and even drilling a shelf up for the occasion. These heavy pieces made our playful little foxes really pop into life.

A boyish baby shower, Sly Little Fox

The baby shower, centered around our food table that featured a soup tasting bar.

Realizing how popular dessert tables have become I was excited to step out and try a new take on party food. The tasting turned out to be such a fun idea and would work for a variety of other party themes. Our guests were able to sample 3 different homemade soups, multiple breads, salads and other goodies. A tasting like ours would also be a lovely and economical way to do food for a larger gathering or a wedding as well.

The soups sat atop wooden candle holders, complete with paper made ribbon labels.

The entire food table was laid out underneath a gigantic fabric wall fox.

To make this fox I enlarged a black and white photo at my local copy center which cost less than $2. I traced the template onto fabric, cut it out, and dredged the whole thing in fabric stiffener before hanging it on the wall to dry. It only took about 3 hours to dry and was firmly attached in time for the party. Finding ways to make BIG design impacts for little dough is a huge part of my 30×30 vision. This would also be such a sweet addition to a nursery or other child’s space as temporary solution for a blank and lonely wall!

The soup was served in small glasses instead of large bowls to encourage tasting. Guests were able to go back to the bar multiple times to enjoy each of the homemade soups. We livened up the glasses for the baby shower, by tying embroidery thread around them.

A platter was set up with mozzarella and tomato toad-stools in a forest of leafy greens.

Along with the loaves we served Bread Spoons!

A tutorial on how to make these can be found here, they were a 2am insomniac idea of mine and ended up being such a fun party hit. As guests ate their soup the bread slowly melted away to reveal an actual spoon underneath- Tasty, functional and oh, so fun:)

Branches were placed around the room decorated with reindeer moss balls.

A homemade fox banner draped across our dessert-case. The free printable baby shower banner, can be downloaded here.

To add texture to the design we lined up all our desserts on a ladder bookcase, I called it the dessert-case. A fun way to incorporate items that were already in the home and it lent a fabulous eclectic feel to the baby shower.

The dessert-case featured animal crackers, fox cake pops, oreo’s, a pirouette log and the lovely watercolor fox boy picture I recently feel in love with.

Homemade cake pops- We chose to make them the easy (cheater’s way) and I was supremely happy with how they came out. Their look is a bit disheveled, perfect for an woodsy fox theme. Plus they were amazing to taste! A simple cake mix swirled with frosting and frozen into balls, stuck with sticks & then dipped into chocolate. We served each pop individually in a shot glass filled with pudding and smashed almonds as dirt.

The budget for our dessert-case was small so we used mostly grocery store food. It is amazing how classy bagged candy becomes when taken out of its packaging. Bowls of tootsie-rolls were instantly transformed when unwrapped and re-covered with pretty ribbon.

For after dinner coffee service each guest received a ginger bread fox cookie on their cup.

Another way we saved money was to create our own cookie cutters. All you need is a template of your design printed and cut out on heavy card-stock. Then simply roll out your dough and use a pairing knife to cut around your template. Although it does take a bit more time, it allows you to make cookies in any shape you can imagine. Foxes now…. Perhaps flowers later?!?

Fox broach favors were given out to each guest and received with joy. Tutorial to come soon for these sweet & sly foxes. They just look so boyishly adorable pinning up a spring scarf.

Favors were pinned up on a woodsy looking wreath and greeted guests with a welcome upon arrival. When the shower was drawing to a close we simply flipped the sign backwards to reveal a thankful farewell for each girl.

The invites were a great start for this baby shower, boyish theme. They are available for free download- baby shower, invitations.

Impractical food- doughnut tree

05.12.10 Posted in 30x30, design, food, party by Victoria

A part of my reasoning for embarking on the 30×30 challenge is to give myself a chance to learn about what I love and hate when it comes to planning parties. It is working…

I am finding although I kind-of hate the process of cooking and menu planning. I absolutely adore coming up with totally impractical but fun design accompaniments. My perfect party would have all the food catered except a few random, not really useful, but lovely little dishes like… pinwheel lollipops, custom parchment wrapped muffins, etched sippy cups, or a lifesaver flower field. Since this is becoming quite the party theme for me, I am going to begin sharing them with you as I create…

One of my favorites so far has been the totally impractical but delicious,

White Pearled Doughnut Hole Tree-

The tree was a beautiful centerpiece that came together so easily. I was inspired by this gorgeous wedding cake. Plus, white doughnut holes just seemed a perfect stand-in for pearls…

Make a Doughnut hole tree yourself-

You will need 4 boxes of doughnut holes, 1 pack of toothpicks and 1 fifteen inch foam floral cone.

  • First poke all of your doughnut holes with a toothpick pushed half way through the hole.
  • Then begin poking toothpicks onto your floral cone one by one.
  • Start at the bottom of your tree and begin making lines of doughnuts up the tree. At the end you can fill in any extra spaces by using half doughnut holes to fill in any left gaps.

We accented ours with a mixture of candied & paper pinwheels. This tree would also be amazing in chocolate!

PS. Next week, a really fun and totally impractical spoon idea for serving soup.

Sherbert & Spice- inspiration board

Birthday Party theme, Sherbert & Spice- invitations

05.06.10 Posted in 30x30, design, party by Victoria

A birthday party theme can make me smile, and a few tend to make me really happy. On occasion a birthday party theme, is so special it makes my heart start to putter, makes my mouth start to water, makes me jump up and down with giddy school-girl excitement.

Our upcoming girls birthday party, Sherbert & Spice

is giving me this type of excitement, and I am finding my inner school-girl giddiness spilling out in all the preparations. Here is your first sneak peak…

The invitations just went out this week and they are some of my favorite birthday party invitations yet!

To make the invitations we used chip board boxes and filed them with tropical Skittles. The top circle speaks loudly the fun of the coming birthday party theme,

while the insides spill out- sharing bits of the theme, even before the festivities begin.

Announcing with a party banner, the joyful event to come. A lovely way to use party details, giving our guests a dose of school-girl giddiness to brighten their day.

Making my heart do flips just to share our birthday party theme, in a box- how lucky I am to be invited:)

Most of these invitations are being hand delivered, if you’d like to send a birthday party theme, through the mail- I would highly recommend losing the box. Party bunting + candy would make your envelope the most lovely in all the mail.

blessings.

PSS. Don’t include glitter in your birthday party theme envelope, no one enjoys a glitter shower. Candy, party bunting and the like seem to be much more sweetly received- free tip from me to you;)

Sly Fox- inspiration board

Next weekend we will gather to celebrate the coming of a little boy who’s name remains a secret. For now we just refer to hm as the little sly fox, a sweet and mysterious one.

Party banner made from fabric

05.04.10 Posted in 30x30, party by Victoria

Fabric party banners may quickly overrun spray painted beer bottles as my new favorite party necessity.

Yes, that is my husband above, isn’t he burly looking these days:) He is holding one of my new favorite thrift store finds, pillowcases. I just love finding great pillowcases these days because it is basically like someone handing me (almost) free fabric to work with. 25 cents is a pretty great deal for what loveliness it can become…

A pillowcase turned into a beautiful backdrop for our recent Perfect Pair bridal shower.

Make your own fabric party banner-

A cheap and easy project with wonderful results. You could make this with any fabric that you find or purchase, but I like it best with old pillow cases or worn down clothes. This would also be such a fun way to count down large milestones with your kids- I’m hoping when we move to big kid beds later this year to make both babies a chain from their crib bedding- marking the special occasion with love.

Directions on making your fabric party banner-

  • Cut out even strips from your fabric. My strips were all cut 2 x 9 inches.
  • Dredge each strip in fabric stiffener to set its shape (I didn’t get a shot of this but look HERE to glance at the brand I use and to learn what I mean by dredge).
  • Place each wet strip around a circular object- kitchen glasses, small plastic balls or bottles seem to work the best.
  • Let dry overnight.
  • Once dry remove the strips and glue together the chain using fabric glue to connect the strip ends to themselves. Overlap the strips one on top of another building your chain as long as you would like it to be.

Note* One standard size pillow case makes approximately a 20 foot long banner using the dimensions above.

I just had a vision of a whole ceiling filled with these- oh goodness, how amazing would that look:)
