Mother’s Day is such a special time for me. Not only to celebrate our wonderful mothers, but also because I struggled for so long desperately wanting to be a mother myself. Something about the battle I went through and the joy of finally holding my babies makes the day so incredibly sweet to me. I hope you have a wonderful weekend and a very happy Mother’s Day to all you mommas. You are amazing, every day…

A couple more reasons to celebrate this weekend.

On creativity.
Paperclip made necklaces.
Chocolate Mousse.
Pretty printable geometrics.
Gorgeous Ombre.
A birthday of sundae toppings.
Beautiful thoughts on Mother’s Day and infertility.
And our personal story with IVF if you are interested.

a winner and a very grateful me

05.07.12 Posted in design, life, styled shoots by Victoria

I am grateful, forever grateful for your wonderful support here in this space! Two years ago I launched this site. A personal challenge to celebrate the moments in life, both big and small. With the hope that we could sit around a long proverbial table and share our ideas together. Today, a gallery of over six hundred DIY projects and fifty eight party profiles later and there is still more to come. There is still so much more to come.

I am grateful that my mind still races awake at 2 am with ideas I just must see created. I am grateful for the ability to collaborate with many of you. I am grateful for the constant flood of encouraging comments, emails and tweets. I am grateful for how this site has allowed me to work at something I adore, I absolutely love my job. What joy!

Last year we launched the first issue of Styled. magazine. I will always remember that morning, I was so nervous to hit publish – I had never done anything quite as crazy before. Your response eased all my fears. Over the last year we’ve had 2,296,403 readers peek into that first edition, and every issue continues to grow. Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined this response. I am continually astounded and grateful and over the moon excited about what’s still to come.

I am grateful. You are amazing. I am more excited than ever to continue spreading this passion for the art of merrymaking, because I really do believe it is a force for happiness in our lives.

PS. Congrats to Sarah who won the clutch in our in our issue 6 giveaway!

a bit of BBQ style

04.25.12 Posted in adult parties, design, summer parties by Victoria

Hosting a BBQ is the quintessential way to celebrate with friends this summer. Doing it with great style and thoughtful details can be challenging amidst a sea of red checker tablecloth ideas. I wanted to think a bit more creatively about this great summer tradition and came up with stylish tips for hosting your own backyard BBQ.

1. Swirl with color: A string of hanging lights is a must for any stylish summer night. To bring that classic look into the afternoon try unscrewing the bulbs and swirling with a tiny amount of rust colored paint at the bottom of each bulb. Your guests will look up and see the same pretty look they would see at night, even while the sun is out. The paint also casts an extra pretty glow once the lights are turned on.

2. Package it well: Burger patties are a must at BBQ’s, but for some the look of all that meat can be distressing. Instead, make your patties in advance and package them in white butcher paper. Stamp the type of meat on top so guests can easily decide which meal they’d like. Beef, veggie, turkey and deer are four great options to have on hand. Finish each package with a simple threaded bow.

3. Tag it all: Basic office tags are an affordable and festive way to ensure your guests can always find their drinks. Look for small labels with string attached in the office section of your local box store (I scored a package of 100 of these for 80 cents). Punch a small hole near the top of each cup and string through. Top each label with an initial or two.

4. Write it out: If you want friends to feel at home, be sure to post the drink menu somewhere visible. An oversize chalkboard is a great way to do this, and (a plus!) it provides sweet kid distraction later in the day. Worth the design effort, installing one permanently will make the yard feel much more loved and lived in. If permanent is not your thing, make a large leaning board that can easily be moved indoors after the party.

5. Hang it up: Bring your decor up onto the walls for an easy way to draw guests eyes outdoors. These folder looking flower pots, called woolly pockets are in the running as my favorite new summer decor essential. A potted garden on the wall, that is just awesome!

merrymaking 4.20.2012

04.20.12 Posted in design, weekend by Victoria

This week has been wonderful. I launched Styled. magazine issue six. Thanks for all your sweet love and support for the project, you are seriously the best! It is my favorite issue yet.

We also had a wonderful getaway with friends in San Fransisco where I saw Jean Paul Gaultier’s fashion exhibit. It was an incredibly provocative show and I was surprised how many families with young children where there. Would you ever take your kids to an R rated art show for the sake of culturing them? Although risque, his materials and general work is quite amazing. I especially loved this dress made from ribbons. Here’s hoping for an equally inspiring weekend for us all.

And a few reasons to celebrate until Monday…
This floral installation is just beautiful.
How Pipi celebrated.
The best cootie catcher I have ever seen.
A pretty DIY necklace for mom.
Stripey favor bags.
Dyed skewers for fondue or smores.
And a very pretty summer party look.

Plus our house is in the Apt Therapy small cool contest, find it here. I’d love your vote!

PS. I joined Instagram! So far I have three photos of cakes, a snap of the ribbon dress, glitter that was priced at $25 and a couple cute twins. I imagine that’s just about right for my stream, I am vhudgins if you want to follow along.

new blogging classes

04.19.12 Posted in design, teaching by Victoria

I had such a blast teaching the organized blogger class this month. I think the most fun part of the class was the networking, like a mini conference, online! There are still a few spots left for the DIY class next Wednesday, where I will be sharing tips on designing great projects and most importantly how making the DIY effort can help to grow your online business. Take a working lunch to join in the fun, register here.

The Alt Channel has also opened classes for May, I will be teaching the organized blogger class, but this time on a Saturday (YAY!). You can sign up for that class here and May’s DIY class here.

My own business of blogging course is ramping up and I could not be more excited about it. Our May course is now sold-out and I have opened another course to run in July. You can read more about the month long business course here. We are running a summer deal, if you sign up for the July course before the start of May you can take 15% off your registration, email me for the discount code.

reason to celebrate | sun and bubbles

04.16.12 Posted in design, reasons by Victoria

Each year the entrance of summer brings a slew of gorgeous light filled bubble photos along with it. This new work by Amanda Pratt has such an airy feel to it. The bubbles, light and placed in butterflys have left me completely inspired.
