Ribbon birds- A nest shower DIY

03.18.10 Posted in decor, diy, Easter, spring by Victoria

I wanted so badly to share this ribbon bird tutorial with you, I just couldn’t wait until Monday. These ribbon birds will be a great focal point for our upcoming bird’s nest baby shower this weekend. They would also serve as a fabulous addition to any spring-Easter-summer party you are throwing. So why not- make a bunch, they are so lovely & easy…. I promise.

Envision 100 of them floating above a desert table- next week;) Until then, just a peak…

Make them yourself:
Cut the ribbon to your desired length (mine are all 8 inches long) and feather the edges using triangular scissor cuts. You will also need to cut and feather wings, I used a 3 inch cut thin version of my main ribbon.

Dredge the whole ribbon bird in liquid fabric stiffener, ensuring that it’s completely covered.

Wrap the ribbon around a circular object with the tail pointed up. Let dry to set its shape. I chose to use plastic kids balls for the bird body shape which seem to be the perfect size. You could also use a glass base, a bottle or even crumpled up tin foil. Wrap the long ribbon around and leave the ends unequal.

Pin the base of the bird together to hold as it dries- pinning allows the top and bottom of the bird to dry tight together and maintain shape when hung. Wrap the small wings around a circular object as well, I placed mine in cups so they wouldn’t wobble while drying.

Set the birds somewhere out of reach and let dry for up to 48 hours, they will take awhile to completely dry. In the meantime listen to your husband exclaim, “Goodness, how many more of those are you making”, as you take up all available kitchen counter space for dry time;)

To assemble the beaks- use a 1 inch piece of coordinating ribbon. Fold into four sections as shown. Stick a pin through the folded beak and dredge in fabric stiffener. Set out to dry overnight and it will be molded into perfect bird beak shape.

Remove the holding objects, remove the pins. Attach all pieces together using two small dabs of fabric glue- one dab for the wings and one to attach the beak.

Hang and enjoy, or allow a bit of bird loitering along a lonely windowsill.

The rest of the shower design will be here on Monday, looking forward to sharing it all with you.

PS. One more day to vote for your favorite parties in the Imperfect Party Challenge.

blessings.
