Ombre Petal Cake

Ombre Petal Cake

There’s nothing like a ombre petal cake to let the entire world know, “I KNOW HOW TO BAKE A CAKE!”. It is a gorgeous showcase of cake decorating abilities that everyone will love. And the best part… It’s way easier to create that you might ever imagine.

In fact you really don’t need to know much at all about baking or decorating a cake to get this look. You use the back of a spoon to make the petals – geniously easy right!?! Just follow our easy instructions below for a pretty showcase of sweet beauty.

Ombre Petal Cake

With Valentine’s Day coming up this weekend, it’s a great time to try your hand at a new cake. This one will make any beau happy in love.

To make the Ombre Petal Cake you will need:

  • Favorite pinata cake recipe (doubled for layers)
  • Homemade butter cream frosting (doubled)
  • Food coloring in your favorite shade
  • Pastry bags, one per each color with a #12 tip on each
  • A small spatula, squatty cheese knife, or a metal spoon

Ombre Petal Cake

1. Start by baking the cakes in small cake pans. This cake looks the best with 4-5 layers to give enough height for the design. Allow the cakes to cool.

2. Stack the cakes with a small layer of butter cream between each layer. Slice carefully the tops before stacking and reserve some of the tops for the crumb coat.

3. Put a crumb coat on the cake. Do this by mixing 2 cups of the butter cream frosting with a handful of the cake crumbs. Spread in a thin and even layer around the entire cake. Refrigerate until set about 45 minutes.

4. Place the rest of the frosting in 3 separate bowls. Add about 3 drops of food coloring to the first bowl, 6 to the second and 10 to the third. Mix well – this should give you three distinct hues of the same color foe the cakes. Stuff the pastry bags with the frosting.

5. Begin on one side of the cake and do a vertical line of frosting dots starting at the bottom with the darkest frosting and moving toward the top getting lighter as you go. I love the look of three layers of each frosting, but this can be varied based on your colors and cake height.

6. Once you have a line of thick dots going to the top of the cake. Use the small spatula (or the back of a spoon!) to gently spread the frosting out horizontally to one side. This is the easiest way to create the gorgeous petal look. Repeat again and again overlapping the petals around the cake.
