Split Level Candy Cake

Split Level Candy Cake

What’s better than a birthday cake? A birthday cake with frosting and candy inside of course! This split level cake has been a dream of mine for some time. I’m thrilled we finally figured out how to make it work. The double layer cake with a party inside is a super fun way to present treats at the next celebration. It brings a dose of majorly festive party bang with very little decorating skills needed – one of those cake options I will be running to again and again this year.

To make the split level candy cake you will need:

  • Your favorite cake recipe
  • Frosting
  • Handfuls of fun candy
  • Skewers

1. Start by baking the cake per package direction in two 8 inch round baking pans. Cool completely before moving to the next step.

2. Place one layer on the bottom of your cake stand and use a small amount of frosting to adhere the candy to the layer. Then start building up with frosting and candy using the frosting as a sort of glue as you build the cake center. Save your favorite pieces of candy (the lips!) to put on last.

3. Once you have a good candy base built generously cover the bottom of the second layer with frosting and place on top of the candy. Push down to one side and use a couple wooden skewers to hold it into place.

4. Finish by adding your favorite candies around the edges and covering the top of the cake with a bit of frosting and sweet candies too.

This party in the middle split level cake will be a show stopper at all the events this coming year. I can already imagine making it work for back-to-school fun, for Halloween with spiders and cobwebs, for Christmas with peppermints! I don’t think I’ve seen a candy cake (besides our piñata cake) that I’ve ever loved more.
