Watercolor Ikea Chair Hack

Inside: Watercolor Ikea chair hack.

I’ve been excitedly working on our outdoor spaces this month and I can’t wait to show you what we’ve been up to soon. It’s been fun to take a break from the inside & look outdoors this season. Sometimes we build out new things and sometimes it’s just as fun to update a chair we currently have on hand. I had a set of these ikea outdoor chairs that had gotten a bit rusty and dull over time, so we took a piece of canvas and some paint and went to town creating a new version that is fresh and bright for summer!

Creating a good painted Ikea chair hack like this is a fun way to purchase something affordable and really make it directly tied into our own personal style. We’ve noticed especially with outdoor furniture, the wear and tear can take a toll on chairs and benches so creating a fresh look without having to buy something new is always a win in my book!

How to create this watercolor Ikea chair hack look

1. Start by painting the canvas. We got the pretty watercolor look by painting the large canvas first before cutting. In place of buying a large expensive piece of fabric, we used a drop cloth available at a local hardware store for under $10!

2. Once the cloth has been painted and dried, cut the canvas into strips that will fit the chair style.

3. Use Mod Podge to secure the painted canvas strips onto the chairs and Mod Podge the top of the canvas once attached. To ensure this Ikea chair hack will wear well outside, spray with a weather protectant spray to finish them off.

  1. Hi- Looks Great!
But what does the backside of the stripes look like once Mod Podged? Also, are the chair slats plastic or wood prior to the fabric? What other type of paint can you use? ( Fabric Paint or paint markers?)
Really attractive! Did you paint the legs- are they metal?
Okay, I am done asking- THANK YOU for your time to answer.
