Holiday fun this way

brunch

I received a sweet gift of A Book That Takes Its Time, in the mail to review and it instantly became a favorite of mine. At a time when everything in our world is speeding towards less words, more quick content, and hustling all the time, I love the concept behind this book. It encourages us all to SLOW down, to feel the weight of paper, to relax and to encourage mindfulness in the everyday. It’s a topic I feel passionately about, but also one that I have a hard time doing for myself amidst the busy of my world.

It is one thing to read the words, SLOW DOWN, in a book… it’s something completely different to be encouraged through the activity of a book to take a beat and to fully feel the present. This book encourages this in the most beautiful of ways! I took a long fall lunch to make one of the good for you recipes and do one of the slow down life activities (send snail mail to friends!), and it did inspire mindfulness for me.

The thing about sending snail mail is that it is slow… but one of the most wonderful gifts to receive. Stopping to create these gifts I knew my friends would love to receive in their mailbox was so lovely. The reward of creating connection with paper vs. an i-phone was a good remembrance to me about what I value and where much of my time should be going. Check out this video to see a couple more of the mindfulness activities found in the book.

I also make the Avocado and apple soup with poached salmon and it was crazy good! Since, I work from home on my own schedule, lunch is a prime example of a simple thing I could do to create a mindful moment in my everyday. To think about what I’d like to eat, to actually do the work to make something yummy and to really enjoy it is such a treat. Most days I just grab whatever quickest from the fridge while answering emails at the computer.

— I’m not the best at this whole mindfulness thing. ;)

I have to say though that stopping and enjoying this book helped so much! It was more than just words telling me to change, instead it gave me experiences that reminded me how lovely it is to take a little time as we hustle our way through this life. I don’t review or recommend many books, but this one was such a treat and a book that I think we could all benefit from adding to our shelf.

A Book That Takes Its Time: An Unhurried Adventure in Creative Mindfulness is by the co-founders and creative directors of Flow Magazine, Irene Smit and Astrid Van der Hulst. It is on-sale October 3, 2017. You won’t be disappointed.

This post is sponsored by Workman Publishing, opinions, photos and love of the book are all mine.
