custom soap carvings

* Welcome to the winter celebration challenge, so fresh and so clean! This DIY project belongs to Brittni’s winter craft party.

Brittni designed this modern (clean) project for her guests to create together. You can use it to carve words, initials, shapes, and anything else you can dream up. The finished soap carvings can be placed as part of your tablescape, like she did, and then let guests choose their favorites to take home as party favors. What a fun project!

To begin the project, run each bar of soap under warm water and, using a dish sponge, gently rub off the top layer of soap to get rid of the carved brand name. It will probably take a few minutes of gentle running to remove the indentation of the brand name. This will give you a smooth, clean surface to work with. Let the soap dry out overnight, before the party.

Gently draw your design on the soap to serve as a guide when carving. It’s okay if the marks don’t show up very well (it’s kind of difficult to write on soap). A slight indentation in the soap will work just fine. Using a linoleum carving tool start carving away the access soap, leaving your design raised. I’d recommend using the No. 6 knife attachment for large areas. And for curved and tighter areas, use the No. 5 and No. 4 carving attachments.

Wrap your finished soaps in antique hankies and tie ‘em up with string. Now you have a unique party favor for guests at the end of the night.

PS. Is anyone else thinking monograms in a wedding bathroom??? Just me? Okay, I can totally imagine it!

Thanks for sharing this design and concept with us Brittni.

blessings.

  1. I totally didn’t see the soaps when I saw her table this morning. I LOVE how the finished carvings look! I am afraid I would lose a finger if I tried to carve but I think I may be willing to give it shot anyway. :)

  2. Aw, that’s sweet Jackie. And thank you Sharon. As long as you keep your fingers (and free hand) away from the blade, you’ll be fine. It’s easy to do and very addictive. I’ve made at least 10 so far.

  3. So cute! I’m a bit nervous about any project involving a knife, but these are adorablel, and they’d be a fun favor at all sorts of events. I do have a question though–by “access” (written after the second picture), do you mean “excess?”

  4. Thanks again for all the compliments everyone. Yep. Definitely meant “excess” Katie. I hate when I miss obvious typos in my writing. Thanks for pointing that out.
