The kids love setting up the ice and checking in on it throughout the day to see how much had melted. We made these totally cool dyed pillowcases, which are great for all our summer slumber parties.

Doing the project at a DIY themed party, or making them ahead of time to give as party favors would be perfect. And don’t forget birthday gifts! This ice dying is a fun way to hand make a gift for teachers, grads soon to go off to college or even dads this time of year.

We made a day of sunny summertime activities to do while we waited for the ice to melt, including working on our jumbo jigsaw puzzle!

Ice Dyeing Tips & Tricks

Here are a few tips and tricks to make sure your tie dye turns out perfectly!

  1. When arranging your items the more scrunches and gathering is better. But, you want to make sure it is as flat as possible. I know this sounds confusing, but you want to make sure ice is hitting all of the items.
  2. The type of ice you use will affect the type of ice tie-dye pattern you will get. Small crushed ice gives a more full colored look, but larger pieces give off a more tie die effect.
  3. Make sure to wash your object prior to dying, this is just a great tip for any tie-dying project you have. You want to make sure your project is wet, so make sure you do not dry a
  4.  I suggest doing this project outside and a warm sunny day. The sun and warmth speeds up the melting process and creates a natural dyed look.
