Sand art party cake

Edible Sand Art (It's Cake!)

Have you jumped into the latest sand art party craze yet? I’ve really enjoyed seeing fun projects like manicures and chairs pop up online. For one of my favorite sand art party styles we turned a gorgeous set of locks into pastel sand art last week. A couple years ago after coloring our own sand I decided it is a trend that should stick around and such a gorgeous way to decorate a party. There is something special to the layering and adding of the bright colors together. Something sincerely 90’s and nostalgic in nature about it all.

So today I’m collaborating with a blogging friend, Sam and taking it a step farther to made a gorgeous display of sand art…

That is EDIBLE!

Because it is actually cake, of course! ;)

Make these layered sand art party cakes to bring to all your birthdays, desserts and bake sales this season. With a sweet taste that everyone will love and a brightly reminiscent feel – your efforts will not be overlooked.

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Brush six 9-inch round cake pans with shortening. Set aside.

2. Make the sand art party cake batter by whisking together flour, baking powder, and salt and set aside. In a separate bowl, cream together butter and sugar. Slowly add the egg whites and mix until combined. Add vanilla and mix. Add flour mixture and milk slowly, alternating between the two. Mix until combined.

3. Divide the batter evenly into 6 bowls. Add food coloring to each bowl until you get your desired colors. Transfer each color to a cake pan and place in over. Cook for 12 minutes. All to cool completely.

Can you imagine how quickly this sand art party cake will brighten up a table – no matter the occasion. I am planning on making an entire batch of the cakes in small glass jars and becoming the star of the school bake sale this fall. It is such a fun way to take the latest, greatest trend and make it even more sweet, while channeling some serious 90’s love along the way.

  1. Love the sand art trend! Will the cake in this not dry out super fast since it’s just crumbs? I’m not sure how tasty it would actually be, especially without icing, and it wouldn’t last very long in the jar? I made a sugar scrub sand art just like this from a blog I found via Pinterest, it worked great, look it up!
