5 Tips for Staying Motivated: Crafters, Makers, & DIY’ers

Inside: Tips for Staying Motivated: Crafters, Makers, & DIY’ers

Have you ever had that one project (or series of projects) that you just can’t seem to finish? Maybe, because of time, motivation, or lack of energy? I can’t even count the times that my DIY to-do list remains unfished because I cannot find the motivation to knock it out.

There are many reasons creating a project can be pushed to the bottom of a to-do list. Life, in general, makes it difficult but the lack of motivation is another tough obstacle for me personally. Shoot, just writing this post required me to dig deep and find some.

Well, I can’t promise you that you won’t have to fight procrastination ever again, but these 5 tips for staying motivated have really inspired my method of creating and making. Check them out!

Identify The Time When You Are Most Productive

Figure out when you feel and work your best and then do all of the things that take the most brainpower during those times. Most of us feel pretty useless in the late afternoon, and for some, they’re productive. A common routine of handmade sellers is to start the day with emails, social media, and small tasks, which meant that craft project creation settles in the afternoon… when they are most tired and not functioning at their best anymore.

The perfect time of day

Stay Away From Social Media

You’ll find more productivity when you cut yourself off from social media. You can’t get things done when you spend hours of every day staring mindlessly at a screen that magically sends you funny pictures and updates from your friends. Make it easier on yourself and tune out of social media. Turn off notifications on your phone. Set specific times that you’re allowed to check social media sites (and ONLY check at these times).

Make it your least priority unless you have an active Facebook fan page for your handmade business and you want to engage with your customers. But still, set limits and remind yourself that you still have more important tasks to finish. You’re able to get back into the groove of that pesky to-do list that’s been giving you side-eyes since last week.

Organize Your Work Place

There is nothing less motivating to me than a completely unorganized workplace. Luckily, this is a simple fix! Spend 15 minutes organizing your work area and cleaning up all that clutter of yours. When your workspace is clear, your mind is clear.

Prepare Your Stuff

One of my most used tips for staying motivated to create and complete craft projects is preparing my supplies. This means gathering up all the items I want to use for that certain project and placing them in one area together. I use these small containers to keep things separate and organized.  So the next time you decide to skip your craft projects? Try laying out your craft supplies the night before.

Take a Break

Some days you’re just not going to feel it, and pushing yourself to work when you absolutely can’t will probably only result in mediocre results and even be more overwhelming. Play hooky for the day or a few hours. Relax. Take a break. You’ll feel a whole lot better tomorrow, you little hustler you.

And just remember that all work and no play aren’t healthy for anyone. One of the best ways to battle procrastination is to give yourself some time off. The key here is to make both your work time and free time count.
