I designed these sailor knot boutonnieres recently for Project Wedding. They would be just as sweet made for a dad, as for a groom.
The traditional sailor knot, also called an eight knot, was made to never be broken. It was designed to withstand the constant weathering of the sea. A perfect sentiment about the strength of family love. It would be special for dad to wear, as a reminder of the unbreakable bond he shares with his kids.
To make the boutonnieres you will need a length of thick boating rope (available at most craft/home stores), scissors, and a piece of floral wire.
- Fold a 12 inch section of rope in half to make a good sized boutonniere.
- Follow this video tutorial to learn how to tie an eight knot.
- Snip of the ends of your tied rope off and pinch the ends together.
- Wrap a length of floral wire around the base for a rustic, unfinished look. Just right for dad.

That is so sweet – perfect for the occasion… love it!
GREAT! I’m planning a ‘knot’ical wedding on a tight budget, AWESOME alternative to floral boutinnieres. :)
I love this idea.. I am just curious what the yellow flower is that is shown above?
