Inside: Yummy DIY Microwave popcorn! How to pop popcorn in a paper bag and how to make your own microwave popcorn.
DIY microwave popcorn is a weekly tradition at our home. A big bowl of popcorn seems to make any evening at home more special. In a desire to involve our kids, we brought it off the stove and into the microwave. Making our own microwave popcorn allows almost any age to help with the entire process, and it makes homemade popcorn a quick (and less messy) treat – so we can make it more often. Here is how to make your own DIY microwave popcorn that is perfect for your next movie night!
The small bags also make a great way to present your DIY microwave popcorn at a party. Serve the popcorn as un-popped kernels with pretty tape and simple directions and your guests will love making their own. A nice addition to an outdoor movie party, or afternoon play date at home.
Yummy DIY Microwave Popcorn
1. Add popcorn seeds to a little bowl
2. Add oil to bowl and stir to coat
3. Pour the mixtures into a glassine (or brown paper) bag and fold top down
4. Seal with tape
5. Pop in microwave for two minutes
6. Optional: Sprinkle with salt and/or pour melted butter over and shake
Microwaves vary, listen for a 3-second pause between pops and then pull it out and give the bag a little shake to keep the DIY microwave popcorn from burning.
Don’t stop with the popping!
Add fun ingredients to the DIY microwave popcorn bags after popping to make different (amazing) tastes and a fancy party presentation. Here are two of my favorite combinations to get you started.
Kettle Corn: Add in 1tbsp popcorn, 1/4tsp oil, 1/4 tsp sugar
Chocolate Dipped Popcorn: Add in1 tbsp popcorn, 1/4 tsp oil, 1/4 cup melted chocolate for coating
I love showing everyone how to pop popcorn in a paper bag! This DIY microwave popcorn is such a great party treat and movie night snack!

This is so cool! I’ve wanted to pop corn from the kernel but I always thought you need a special machine… silly me! It’s cool to see how simple it is.
One quick question, I’ve tried using parchment paper to make mini bags like the ones you made, but tape doesn’t stick to it! What kind of tape are you using? Maybe I’m using the wrong kind of paper?
Thanks,
Laura
So clever–I never though you could make your own microwavable popcorn!
Is there anything better in life?
Such a cute idea! I may have missed it but how much popcorn (kernels) do you add to the bag? Is it 1 tablespoon on just regular popcorn too (I noticed that the added ingredient recipe says 1 tablespoon)? Also, I noticed butter in one of the pictures…can you substitue melted butter for oil? Thanks.
Yes, 1 table spoon is the correct amount. I wouldn’t substitute butter for the popping but afterwards it makes for a great topping!:)
