How to hand font a balloon

We are continuing our hand font series today with one of my favorite projects. A very large balloon! Personalizing party balloons has been a favorite past-time of mine over the years (see here) and this project is so easy and fun. You don’t even need grand writing skills to make it work, just spacing and a steady hand.

After experimenting with sharpies, ball points, and markers we ended up using a chalk pen for the project. I would definitely recommend buying a box of them for writing on balloons of your own. They have a nice thick application and once dried (about 20 min), they are set onto the balloon and will not wipe of on walls or other surfaces.

To make the hand font balloon, begin by spacing out your letters on the balloon. Since you are working on a curved surface it helps to decide where you’d like the words to start and stop. Draw small lines to close in the area you’ll be writing and along the line marks. Begin writing in your statement – with the thick application of chalk pens most writing styles will look great!

Once the words are all written in, take a dry cloth and rub the balloon to erase any spacing lines. The chalk pen erases easily when wet, which will allow for mistakes to be easily fixed along the way. Let dry for about 20 minutes and enjoy celebrating something special, or just today.

PS. Have you seen the hand font lettered wrapping paper and hand font faus cotton canvas gift tags.

Collaboration for this project was done with my friend Brody, who is an amazing hand font illustrator. Photography done for A Subtle Revelry by Erin Holland.
